Join us for a special
in-person tribute to one of American cinemas most gifted directors, Stuart
Rosenberg. A native of Brooklyn, Rosenberg cut his teeth directing hard-edged
1950s TV crime series like "The Untouchables" and "Naked City,"
before moving on to features in the early 1960s. His best films combine a beautiful,
intuitive approach to working with actors, with a sympathetic feeling for the lives of
outlaws and outcasts like the prisoners in COOL HAND LUKE or the smalltime hustlers in
POCKET MONEY and THE POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE.

7:00 PM Double Feature
COOL HAND LUKE, 1967, Warner Bros., 126 min. Rosenbergs most acclaimed film stars
Paul Newman as a convict determined to outwit and escape the grinding brutality of
life in a Southern prison. Co-star George Kennedy won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor
for his superb performance as Newmans devoted friend and fellow inmate.
THE POPE OF
GREENWICH VILLAGE, 1984, MGM/UA, 120 min. Mickey Rourke and
Eric Roberts star as a pair of hard luck thieves determined to make one big score,
in Rosenbergs lyrical New York crime drama. Watch for excellent supporting work from
a gallery of great character actors, including M. Emmet Walsh, Burt Young, Philip Bosco,
and a wonderful, snarling performance by Geraldine Page as a grieving mother.
