Director Hector (PIXOTE) Babencos exquisite adaptation of Manuel Puigs novel centers on a tormented political activist (Raul Julia) and a flamboyant gay man (William Hurt, in an Oscar-winning performance) who are imprisoned together in a hellish South American jail. The inmates only escape comes in the form of Hurts elaborate, film-induced fantasies of the fabulous Spider Woman (Sonia Braga). A surprise critical and commercial hit when it was released in 1985, KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN has been unavailable theatrically since its original run.
