Following the success of last year’s series, our second
Jornadas de Cinema Méxicano returns with an even more amazing line-up, showcasing 5 of
the best new Mexican films, all of them exploring the new modern Mexico and its roots.
Also included -- a shorts program and a special spotlight tribute to Hollywood and Mexican
icon, actress Salma Hayek, with a Sneak Preview of Julie Taymor’s FRIDA
(soon to be released by Miramax Films), as well as the acclaimed MIRACLE ALLEY (EL
CALLEJÓN DE LOS MILAGROS).
This year is a good vintage for the Mexican cinema -- we're
thrilled to premiere Beto Gómez ‘s entertaining crime comedy THE CAIMAN’S
DREAM (EL SUENO DEL CAIMÁN); Carlos Reygadas astonishing début in super-Cinemascope,
the lyrical JAPÓN; Juan Antonio de la Riva’s ballad EL GAVILÁN DE LA
SIERRA; Fernando Sariñana’s urban drama CIUDADES OBSCURAS and Ignacio
Ortiz Cruz’s mesmerizing tale revisiting Mexican folk heritage and history CUENTO
DE HADAS PARA DORMIR COCODRILOS.

THE CAIMAN’S DREAM (EL
SUENO DEL CAIMÁN), 2001, InterMedia/Latina, 102 min. Dir. Beto Gómez. A highly
entertaining, low-budget B&W black crime comedy -- a bouquet of Mexican eccentricity,
superstition and surrealism. After a failed robbery, Inaki quickly leaves Spain for
Guadalajara where his father, Patxi (Kandido Uranga) rents a room from drag queen
landlord, Aunt Carmen. He shares it with El Caimán (Rafael Velasco), who is frequently
visited by the ghost of his mocking mother (Patricia Reyes Spindola). Caught up in the
Caimán’s dream, Iñaki and Paxti join his gang for an improbable bank robbery. This
most unlikely heist is put together by inexpert thieves, and helped by oblivious cops and
an accommodating bank staff. Discussion following with director Beto Gómez (schedule

JAPÓN (JAPAN), 2001, The
Coproduction Office, 122 min. Dir. Carlos Reygadas. An astonishing début in
super-Cinemascope, written, directed and produced by Carlos Reygadas, who
won a special mention for the film at the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes. JAPÓN is a
lyrical, poetic meditation, a cross between a landscape film and an existential drama
about death, sex, love and religion: Kiarostami’s TASTE OF CHERRY meets Andrei
Tarkovsky. A depressed painter (Alejandro Ferretis) leaves the city to prepare for
his suicide. He retreats to a tiny remote mountain village where a caring old Indian widow
(Magdalena Flores) gives him shelter. The cruel beauty of the deprived land, and
the humanity and simplicity of his host, slowly awaken him to a new sense of life.

chronicles the life of Mexican icon, bigger-than-life artist Frida Kahlo -- incarnated by
Mexican goddess and Hollywood star Salma Hayek! From Kahlo's stormy relationship
with husband muralist, Diego Rivera, her many lovers (both male and female) including the
exiled Leon Trotsky, her struggle for acceptance as an artist to her love for Mexico,
Salma Hayek offers a complex portrait of Frida moved by passion and sensuality, proud of
her "mexicanidad". With a great cast including Alfred Molina (Diego Rivera),
Antonio Banderas (David Alfaro Siqueiros), Ashley Judd (Tina Modotti) and many others.
Featuring an hallucinatory sequence by the Brothers Quay that is not to be missed! "Frida
belongs to many people around the world [..] but it is very important to state this is not

MIRACLE ALLEY (EL CALLEJÓN
DE LOS MILAGROS), 1995, Imcine, 140 min. Dir. Jorge Fons. Based on Nobel laureate Naguib
Mahfouz’s novel, transposed to contemporary Mexico City to narrate the life of the El
Callejón de los milagros’ inhabitants, MIRACLE ALLEY is one of the most highly
acclaimed Mexican films of the past 10 years. The narrative is structured in four
episodes, each focusing on one individual in the same place and the same time frame. Salma
Hayek offers a compelling portrait as Alma, a strong willed beauty in a freefall from
grace, as she succumbs to drugs and prostitution. With Ernesto Gómez, Bruno Bichir.

become the "perfect woman" after losing weight. Javier Patron’s "La
Maceta" (The Flowerpot, 18 min.) A seemingly simple tale about an old
woman’s quest to get her flower pot up her apartment buildings stairs. Carlos
Cuaron’s "Juego De Ninos" (Child’s Play, 5 min.) A teenage girl
understands why her father is opposed to her romantic obsession. Roberto Rochin’s
"Paso Del Norte" ( Passage North, 30 min.) Powerful film about one
man’s story during the mass migration from rural to urban Mexico during the
1940’s. Patricia Carrillo Carrera’s "Gertrudis Blues" (10 min.)
Fascinating documentary on a little-known group of Afro-Indigenous people known as the
Mascogo. Sergio Umansky’s "Aqui Iba El Himno" (Here Was The Anthem,
22 min.) Gripping thriller about two wealthy teenage boys who get more than they bargained
for when they go to score drugs. Salvador Aguirre & Alejandro Lubezki’s "De
Mesmer Don Amor Ó Te Para Dos" (From Mesmer With Love or Tea For Two, 10 min.)
Funny tale about a young man who resorts to an extreme practice to fulfill his desires. Filmmakers in person T.B.A. All Films on 35mm.

modern Mexican street life. From hookers, corrupt policemen, homeless junkies and
teenagers, Fernando Sariñana assembles twelve striking stories crossing paths in the
street. With Bruno Bichir, Jesús Ochoa, Hector Súarez and Dolores Heredia. Special
Mention from the Critics Jury at the Guadalajara Film Festival 2002. Discussion

min. Dir. Ignacio Ortiz Cruz. Arcángel (Arturo Ríos) suffers from a sleep
disorder, and his wife, pregnant with their second child, is ready to leave him.
Unfortunately, a curse runs in the family since great grandfather, Tranquilino, looked
into the eyes of a demon coyote! Arcángel knows something terrible is going to happen
when he travels with his son to the abandoned family house, looking for his salvation.
"It's said that only love can save the family from disgrace, but that's crap. Love
doesn't exist." A complex and mesmerizing saga, combining the lives of Arcángel and
his ancestors, as well as folk tales and historical moments from The Reform War and the
Mexican Revolution. Winner of 2002 Golden Ariels for Best Direction and Best Actor. Discussion following with director Ignacio Ortiz Cruz.

(THE SPARROW HAWK OF THE SIERRA) EL
GAVILÁN DE LA SIERRA, 2001, Imcine, 100 min. Dir. Juan Antonio de la Riva. Rosendo
(Guillermo Larrea), a singer in the Mexican
public transportation system, returns to his hometown in northern Durango after the brutal
police killing of his brother, Gabriel (Juan Ángel Esparza), and friends. As Rosendo
questions friends and family about his brother’s life and composes a ballad/ corrido
to his brother’s memory, the past unfolds and melts with the present, sometimes in
the same frame. An unusual and beautiful film where Gabriel appears - depending on the
speaker - both as selfless Robin Hood as well as cruel, greedy gangster. Discussion following with director Juan Antonio de la Riva (schedule
permitting).

A raíz del éxito del año pasado, nuestras Jornadas de Cine
Mexicano traerán este año una alineación aún más increíble, con cinco de las mejores
películas nuevas del cine azteca, que exploran tanto el México actual como a sus raices.
La muestra incluye un programa de cortometrajes y un tributo especial a la actriz Salma
Hayek, diva de México y de Hollywood, con la proyección anticipada de su nueva
película, FRIDA, dirigida por Julie Taymor (un próximo estreno de Miramax Films) así
como la muy premiada obra de Jorge Fons, EL CALLEJÓN DE LOS MILAGROS.
El corriente ha sido un buen año para el cine de México.
Nos enorgullece estrenar la entretenida comedia delictiva de Beto Gomez, EL SUEÑO DEL
CAIMáN; el elocuente debut, en Super-Cinemascope y con el lirismo de Carlos Reygadas, de
JAPóN; los sentidos corridos de Juan Antonio de la Riva sobre EL GAVILáN DE LA SIERRA;
el perspicaz drama urbano de Fernando Sariñana, CIUDADES OBSCURAS, y el hipnótico
revisionismo acerca de la herencia y la historia mexicanas de Ortíz Crúz en CUENTO DE
HADAS PARA DORMIR COCODRILOS.

EL SUEÑO DEL CAIMáN,
2001, InterMedia/Latina, 102 mins. Dir: Beto Gomez. Una comedia negra de bajo presupuesto,
gratamente entretenida y en blanco y negro. Un rosario de excentricidades, superstición y
surrealismo. Luego de un asalto fallido, Inaki deja España por Guadalajara. Allí, Patxi
(Kandido Uranga), su padre, renta un cuarto a la travesti de su tía Carmen, cuarto que
comparte con El Caimán (Rafael Velasco), a quien lo molesta el fantasma burlón de su
madre (Patricia Reyes Spindola). Presos del mundo raro del Caimán, Inaki y Paxti se unen
a la banda de éste para tomar parte de un insolito robo, planeado torpemente pero
ejecutado gracias a la desidia policial y la ayuda del personal del mismo banco. Plática con el director Beto Gomez luego de la proyección (si el

JAPÓN, 2001, The Coproduction Office,
122 mins. Dir: Carlos Reygadas. Un sorprendente debut en super-Cinemascope, escrito,
dirigido y producido por Carlos Reygadas, ganador de una mención por su película en la
Quincena de los Directores en Cannes. JAPóN es una meditación de gran sensibilidad y
lirismo; un drama paisajista y existencialista, sobre el amor, la muerte, el sexo y la
religión- el resultado es un vértice ideal entre la soledad de Tarkovsky y las cerezas
de Kiarostami. Un pintor deprimido (Alejandro Ferretis) deja su ciudad para preparar su
suicidio. Hacia la distante comarca donde se retira, conoce a una viuda indígena y
cuidadosa (Magdalena Flores) que le provee de techo. La cruda belleza de la tierra
inhospita y la humana simpleza de su anfitriona lo despertarán, lentamente, hacia una
nueva apreciación por la vida.

renombrada directora de teatro, y de cine, Julie Taymor (TITUS, "El rey león")
narra la crónica de este ícono mexicano por excelencia, la artista Frida Kahlo,
protagonizada por la diva mexicana y hollywoodense Salma Hayek. Desde la tempestuosa
unión de Kahlo con su esposo, el muralista Diego Rivera, y sus varios amantes- masculinos
y femeninos -incluyendo al exilado León Trotsky, hasta su lucha por su reconocimiento
como artista y su amor por México, Salma Hayek ofrece un múltiple retrato de una Frida
movida por su pasión, su sensualidad, y su orgullo de ser mexicana. Junto a un elenco
estelar encabezado por Alfred Molina (Diego Rivera), Antonio Banderas (David Alfaro
Siqueiros), Ashley Judd (Tina Modotti), entre otros, y con una imperdible escena de
halucinación por parte de los Hermanos Quay.
"Frida pertenece a muchos pueblos de todo el mundo
[..] pero es importante reiterar que esta no es una película estadounidense, sino
mexicana, y es así por Salma. La película se filmó en México, la mayoría del reparto
es mexicano y el equipo de filmación es mayoritariamente de ese país" -- Julie

EL CALLEJÓN DE LOS MILAGROS,
1995, Imcine, 140 mins. Dir: Jorge Fons. Basado la novela del premio Nobel, Naguib
Mahfouz, la acción se traslada a la ciudad de México y sigue el derrotero de los
habitantes del Callejón de los Milagros, una de las películas mexicanas más aclamadas
de los últimos diez años. La historia se desprende en cuatro episodios, cada uno
centrado en un individuo y transcurren en el mismo lugar y en el mismo momento. Salma
Hayek compone un sentido retrato de Alma, tan bella como vigorosa, pero que sufre una

documental sobre un pequeño grupo tribal de indígenas de origen africano llamados

suspenso sobre dos niños ricos que obtienen más de lo que se proponen cuando realizan

CUENTO DE HADAS PARA DORMIR
COCODRILOS, 2002, IMCINE, 100 mins. Dir: Ignacio Ortiz Cruz. Arcángel (Arturo Ríos)
sufre de insomnia y su mujer, preñada con el segundo, está dispuesta a abandonarlo.
Desafortunadamente, es todo una maldición que corre en las familia desde que su abuelo
Tranquilino miró a un coyote a los ojos. Arcángel sabe pués que algo terrible sucederá
cuando viaje por su salvación, con su hijo, hacia la casa abandonada. "Dicen que
solo el amor puede salvar a la familia de la desgracia, pero no es cierto. El amor no
existe". Una crónica ambiciosa y fascinante, que combina las vidas de Arcángel y
sus ancestros, así como los cuentos populares y anecdotas históricas de las Guerras de
Reforma y de la Revolución Mexicana. Ganadora del Ariel de Oro 2002 al Mejor Director y
Mejor Actor. Plática al final de la proyección con el director Ignacio Ortiz Cruz.

EL GAVILÁN DE LA SIERRA, 2001,
Imcine, 100 mins. Dir: Juan Antonio de la Riva. Rosendo (Guillermo Larrea), cantor de los
transportes públicos en la ciudad, regresa a su tierra natal al norte de Durango a causa
del brutal asesinato de su hermano Gabriel (Juan Ángel Esparza) por parte de la policía.
Rosendo inquiere entre familiares y amigos sobre la vida que llevaba su hermano y compone
un corrido en su memoria. De esta manera, la imaginación del poeta mezcla imagenes del
pasado con las del presente, en una película inusualmente bella y en donde, según el
punto de vista de quien hable, Gabriel es un Robin Hood o un gangster cruel. Plática con
el director Juan Antonio de la Riva luego de la proyección. (si el tiempo lo permite).
