[Spielberg Theatre] Lecture: "James Joyces The
Dead and Cinema" by Kevin Barry
John Huston and Roberto Rossellini both re-shaped James Joyce's famous story "The
Dead" for new audiences of cinema. Rossellini's VIAGGIO IN ITALIA (1953), the last of
'Ingrid's trilogy,' so transformed the story that Joyce's hand is scarcely detectable. By
contrast, Huston's THE DEAD (1987) has satisfied its audiences as a reliable version of an
original classic. This lecture by Irish author and film historian Kevin Barry will
describe the surprising affinities between these major works of Huston and Rossellini:
films in which almost nothing happens, films intimate with death, male failure, and the
collapse of any confidence in a better future. Presented in collaboration with the Huston
School of Film & Digital Media, National University of Ireland, Galway. [Illustrated
lecture approx. 60 min.]

LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF,
2003, 169 min. Dir. Thom Andersen. A must see for Los Angeles history buffs and
cinema enthusiasts who will marvel at the hundreds of archival and film clips revealing an
almost secret history of the City of Angels! "This cinematic essay focuses on the
discrepancy between the lived - in urban reality of Los Angeles and its various
century-deep cinematic mythologies, the movie is about more than just what the movies get
wrong. Its about the way the imaginary space of cinema intrudes upon the actual
space of our lives, so that the L.A. of the movies becomes a kind of separate urban
reality unto itself." -- Toronto Star. Voted the Best Documentary of
2004 by the Village Voice.

ANIMATION A-GO-GO! A TRIBUTE TO ANIMATOR JOANNA PRIESTLEY
Presented in conjunction
with ASIFA-Hollywood (International Animated Film Society)
Joanna Priestleys body of films (17!) have deservedly earned
their place in the pantheon of contemporary international animators. Ms. Priestleys
work has won numerous awards at many film festivals worldwide, including, the Sundance and
Telluride Film Festivals, among many others. Inventively conceived, superbly crafted, and
rich with insight into the physical and spiritual dilemmas that confront us all. We
welcome Ms. Priestley in person for the California premieres of her new Flash film
"Dew Line," "Fighting Gravity," a short documentary about her creative
process, and "Andaluz," a film about southern Spain that she made with Boston
animator Karen Aqua. "Voices" (1985, 4 min., drawings on paper). A
refreshing and humorous look at personal phobias studded with historical cartoon figures.
"She-Bop" (1988, 8 min., drawings and puppet animation). Priestley explores
the dark, feminine side of spirituality courtesy of Kali, goddess of creation,
preservation and destruction. "All My Relations"
(1990, 5 min., drawings on paper with 3-D frames). A satire about the arc of a romance,
from the initial lust to marriage, childbirth, upward mobility and the disintegration of
the relationship. "Pro & Con" (1993, 9 min., object and cel
animation, puppets, drawings and clay painting). A look at the United States prison system
through the eyes of a female, African-American corrections officer and a white, male
inmate using self-portraits drawn by inmates at the Oregon State Penitentiary. "Grown
Up" (1993, 7 min., drawings on paper, pixilated hands and object animation).
Using object animation to convey a sense of the evolution of mind, body and spirit about
the pleasures and perils of becoming middle-aged. There will be a
discussion with Joanna Priestley between the two segments of the program. "Fighting
Gravity" (2004, 12 min., documentary). A behind the scenes look at
Priestleys studio and the artwork that she creates for her films. "Utopia
Parkway" (1997, 5 min., drawings on paper, objects and replacement animation).
Inspired by the box sculptures of artist Joseph Cornell, who lived in the same house
nearly all his life on Utopia Parkway, in Queens, New York. "Surface Dive"
(2000, 8 min., drawings on paper, objects and replacement animation). More than 600
sculptures, 200 glass pieces and 2,200 drawings were used to create this visually striking
abstract film about a diving trip to a freshwater lake in the Yucatan. "Andaluz"
(2004, 6 min., drawings on paper). Priestleys newest short looks at memories of a
trip to southern Spain. "Dew Line" (2005, 5 min., computer animation).
Priestleys first flash animation. A striking continuation of her fluid, playful
style.
