Double Feature:
LA Premiere! ROMA, 2004, Sogepaq, 155 min. Dir. Adolfo Aristarain. Manuel Cueto (Juan
Diego Botto) a young Argentine journalist has been hired to transcribe the memoirs of
famous novelist Joaquin Gonez (Jose Sacristan) who is retired in Spain. Through brilliant
dialogue and flashbacks, the whole life of the writer unfolds. From a too-perfect
childhood in a suburban Buenos Aires barrio with his mother Roma (Susu Pecoraro) and
father (Gustavo Garzon), to the turmoil of the 1960s dictatorship, this
slice-of-life of a typical free-thinking Argentinian is also the historical drama of the
filmmaker Adolfo Aristarain himself. Cocktail Reception
sponsored by Heineken starting at 6:30 PM. Plus a presentation to BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
Composer Gustavo Santaaolla in person.
Saturday, October 28 3:00 PM
LA Premiere! PATOROZITO: LA GRAND ADVENTURA, 2006, Patagonik, 75 min. Dir. Jose
Luis Masa. Ever since the Indian cacique was born from the comics of Dante Quinteros,
Patorozito has delighted numerous generations of Argentine children. In this second movie
installment, Patoruzito embarks on even more amazing quests in the Patagonian region
resulting in a most charming animated adventure tale about a young boy and his family who
live in the outback. There will NOT be a discussion following
with director Jose Luis Masa as was originally announced.
Saturday, October 28 5:30 PM
LA Premiere! ILUMINADOS POR EL FUEGO, 2006, Latidos Films, 100 min.
Dir. Tristan Bauer. The most important film ever made on the subject, and 23 years
after the fact, Argentina exorcises its demons over the Malvinas/Falklands War in the
South Atlantic. Through a subtitle flashback narrative style, the life of Esteban
Leguizamon Gaston Pauls), is told after his suicide. How he was thrown into a war
that he didnt ask for, with no food, no weapons and no training, and how he was
later abandoned as a veteran in a society trying to ignore that terrible political
disaster. Tristan Bauers multi-award-winning feature is surely the most powerful and
important of the movies coming out of Argentina this year. Discussion
with actor Gaston Pauls.
Saturday, October 28 8:00 PM
LA Premiere! TIEMPO DE VALIENTES, 2005, TF1, 112 min. Using
Jewish humor and screwball-comedy in his second feature film, director Damian Szifron
explores the tandem-buddy-picture-style pioneered in the spaghetti westerns of Bud Spencer
and Terence Hill. Psychoanalyst, Mariano (Diego Peretti) is assigned to community
service and must accompany overweight and depressed Alfredo Diaz (Luis Luque) in
his rounds. Atypical in current Argentine cinema, this film is entertaining and popular,
mixing gags with social criticism.
MOON OF AVELLANEDA (LUNA DE AVELLANEDA),
2004, 143 min. Dir. Juan Jose Campanella. A classic argentine neighborhood club that has
seen great splendor in past times is currently immersed in a great economical crisis that
puts its existence in jeopardy. The only possible solution seems to be to turn the club
into a Casino, which would greatly conflict with the ideals and intentions with which the
entity was founded during the 1940s: a club for social gathering, cultural
enrichment and sports. The descendants of the original founders will debate themselves
between the possibility of saving the club at any price or re-embracing those original
values. |
