The 87th Anniversary of the Egyptian Theatre -
October 18th
The Egyptian Theatre is one of Hollywood's most historically
significant buildings given that it was home to the first Hollywood movie premiere back in
1922. The film was ROBIN HOOD starring Douglas Fairbanks and the date was October 18th.
This year the Egyptian turns 87 and the former silent movie palace will once again fill
with live music accompanying the classic silent THE BIG PARADE, on the big screen. The
American Cinematheque finished a restoration of the landmark building in December 1998 at
a cost of $15 million. Now, nearly a decade into the 21st century, audiences can still sit
under the same sunburst ceiling as Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin and
Pola Negri sat under on opening night almost 90 years ago - to watch a silent classic or a
digital projection of a state-of-the-art production.

Sunday, October 18 5:00 PM LECTURE
Co-presented with the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles
The Great Dane: The Tragic Life and Career of MGM Silent
Comedian Karl Dane. (approx. 60 min.) The story of Karl
Dane is almost a cautionary tale for our own turbulent economic times. The tall, lanky
former carpenter from Denmark shot to stardom when he was signed to play the part of Slim
in King Vidor's silent masterpiece THE BIG PARADE, which made its debut at Graumans
Egyptian Theater in 1925. He went on to star in more than 40 films; however, according to
Hollywood scandal books, he lost his contract when talkies revealed his Scandinavian
accent. Reduced to poverty at the height of the Great Depression, Dane operated a
hamburger stand near the very studio gates where he had enjoyed fame and fortune only a
few years earlier, before finally committing suicide in 1934. Laura
Petersen Balogh, author of the recent book Karl Dane: A Biography & Filmography
(McFarland), will draw on her five years of primary research in Denmark and the U.S. to
provide an overview of Dane's dramatic life and career. Join us between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m.
for cake and wine to toast the Egyptian Theatres 87th anniversary and for a
booksigning with Laura Peterson Balogh. Special Ticket
prices: Lecture only: $5 Cinematheque and Art Deco Society Members and $10 General
Admission. Lecture and film, THE BIG PARADE: $12 General; $10 student/Senior & $9
Cinematheque or Art Deco Society Members

KARL DANE
Egyptian
Anniversary! THE BIG PARADE, 1925,
Warner Bros., 140 or 130 min. King Vidors 1925 account of World War I delivers both
epic sweep and intimate emotional moments in its tale of a young soldier (John Gilbert)
who finds solace in the arms of a French woman (Renee Adoree) amidst the horror of war. Made
just 7 years after the end of the Great War, the film was the first war picture to tell
its story from the point of view of a soldier. While the first half of the film is part
light-hearted comedy, the second depicts war very realistically. The three soldiers the
film follows, including Karl Dane (Slim), are described in the film in this way:
Here 'Slim' Jensen worked....just one of labor's millions, building a nation."
Tobacco chewing, blue-collar steelworker/riveter Slim Jensen (Karl Dane) works high atop a
steel skyscraper.
"Along The Bowery were men of another trade. Among them was 'Bull' O'Hara."
Bartender 'Bull' Michael O'Hara (Tom O'Brien) wipes a glass clean behind the bar.
"On life's other side were rich men, chiefs of industry...and rich men's sons -
such as Jim Apperson." Jim Apperson (John Gilbert), the affable son of a wealthy
southern mill owner, belongs to the monied class - he is reclining and lathered up for a
shave by a black servant, who asks: "Are you for sure goin' to take a job in your
father's mill?" A lounger, he is unambitious and uninterested in productive work:
"Me...work? I should say not!" (for more on the film click here )
Live musical accompaniment by Robert Israel from the original
score. Special Ticket Prices: Lecture
& Film, THE BIG PARADE: $12 General Admission; $10 Student/Senior; $9 Cinematheque or
Art Deco Society Members.

Wednesday, October 28 8:00 PM ROBERT MITCHUM
Double Feature: THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, 1955, Sony Repertory, 93 min. Dir.
Charles Laughton. Robert Mitchum is astonishing as a sociopathic wandering preacher who
uses his fire-and-brimstone fundamentalism to mask his schemes to bilk money from gullible
yokels or, when that doesnt work, to blithely rob and murder them. Trailer
CAPE FEAR, 1962, Universal, 106
min. Dir. J. Lee Thompson. Gregory Peck is an ordinary family man terrorized by psychotic
ex-con Robert Mitchum in this adaptation of John D. MacDonalds THE EXECUTIONERS. A
classic Bernard Herrmann score drives this relentless thriller, a finely tuned suspense
piece that was remade by Martin Scorsese in 1991. Trailer Book signing of Heaven and Hell to Play With: The Filming of The Night of
the Hunter by author Preston Neal Jones between films.

Thursday, October 29 8:00 PM
Los Angeles Premiere! BANKING ON HEAVEN, 2005, Over the Moon Productions, 90 min. An
unflinching look at a cult of Fundamentalist Latter-Day Saints (FLDS). The polygamist
communities of Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale, Utah, are home to a culture that
routinely practices child rape, welfare fraud and systematic mind control. Director Dot
Reidelbach and writer-producer Laurie Allen, who escaped a similar sect, have constructed
a documentary out of hidden-camera footage, interviews with polygamist escapees,
"lost boys" (young men and children cast out of the community) and government
officials. Writer/Producer Laurie Allen was born into an infamous and violent polygamous
sect and escaped at age 16. Her documentary, "Banking on Heaven," exposes the
struggles women and children face in a polygamist sect. Laurie and her film played an
essential role in the investigation, capture and conviction of former FLDS leader, Warren
Jeffs. Laurie remains actively involved in the ongoing criminal trials involving Colorado
City/Hildale residents following the April 2008 raid on the FLDS Yearning for Zion ranch
in Texas.Discussion following with writer-producer Laurie
