ABOUT THE SERIES: It is with a heavy heart that the American Cinematheque pays tribute to the incomparable Academy Award-winning actor Diane Keaton with a curated selection of films that traverse the luminary’s rise to fame during the New Hollywood movement and beyond. Our tribute honors the eccentric and complex performances of a singular artist whose vast range, from raw vulnerability to exquisite comedic timing, resulted in one of the most effortlessly cool onscreen personalities of her generation. Keaton became a household name with her role as Kay Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s gangster epics, THE GODFATHER and THE GODFATHER PART II, where her magnetism and screen presence matched that of Al Pacino’s, letting Hollywood know a new star was born. She continued her impressive run in the 1970s by lending her new found stardom to comedy films such as LOVE AND DEATH and LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR, and culminating with an Academy Award-winning performance for her iconic embodiment of ANNIE HALL. Returning to the realm of historical epics, Keaton’s performance in REDS helped propel the film to a staggering 12 Oscar nominations. While Keaton is most revered for her work in historical epics and comedies, she perhaps left her most indelible mark with her roles in family dramas such as SHOOT THE MOON, MARVIN’S ROOM and THE FAMILY STONE, cementing her place in the hearts of generations of moviegoers.
