ABOUT THE EVENT:

Join us for the Los Angeles premiere of the Sundance Film Festival U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic feature ATROPIA as a 2025 centerpiece presentation of PROOF! Originally a short film before evolving into a full-length feature, ATROPIA, starring Alia Shawkat and Callum Turner, embodies the festival’s mission of showcasing bold ideas that bloom from short form to long form. Filmmaker Hailey Gates and actor Alia Shawkat will be in-person for a Q&A between the short film and the feature film.

ABOUT THE FILMS:

“Shako Mako,” Dir. Hailey Gates, 17 Min

A woman (Alia Shawkat) walks in an Iraqi village. American soldiers drive by. Then, an explosion. But this is not what it appears to be, and the woman isn’t happy with her role.

ATROPIA, 2025, Dir. Hailey Gates, 104 Min

When an aspiring actress (Alia Shawkat) in a military role-playing facility falls in love with a soldier (Callum Turner) cast as an insurgent, their unstimulated emotions threaten to derail the performance. Welcome to Atropia: an invented nation just close enough to Los Angeles for Hollywood set builders to create the fake villages, but far enough away that the performers who live on-site are not exactly flourishing in their acting careers.
