Wandering down an empty Parisian street in the wee hours with one’s mates, doing drugs in a posh flat – in Grandrieux’s most recent film, abstracted storytelling and jarring digital cinematography portray these youthful acts as deeply sinister. That this lifestyle leads Lenz (Kristian Marr) to the dark underworld of snuff porn is seen not as a shock but a natural progression. Caught in a love triangle between a nurse, Hélène (Ariane Labed) and a mob boss’ daughter (Roxane Mesquida), Hélène’s desperate bid for personal annihilation proves too powerful for Lenz, leading to a haunting finale of mutually assured destruction as driven by unseen forces.
