ABOUT THE FILMS:

“Melting,” 1965, Dir. Thom Andersen, 6 Min, AMPAS, USA

“Melting” shows the natural monostructural disintegration of a strawberry sundae, its passage from rigidity to softness, from edibility to waste. The spoon resting on the plate refers to the human presence, which lurks behind the screen, declining to interfere with what transpires.

EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE, ZOOPRAXOGRAPHER, 1975, Dir. Thom Andersen, 60 Min, Cinema Guild, USA

A fascinating investigation into the work of photographer and cinema pioneer Eadweard Muybridge, Thom Andersen’s much-lauded documentary incorporates a biographical overview of its subject with a re-animation of his historic sequential photographs as well as concise and innovative analysis.

“Juke: Passages from the Films of Spencer Williams,” 2015, Dir. Thom Andersen, 30 Min, Grasshopper Film, USA

Thom Andersen reconsiders the films of Spencer Williams, the pioneering African American screenwriter, director, and actor whose 1940s melodramas centered on sinners and saints—Beale Street mamas and storefront preachers, crime bosses and upwardly striving lawyers and soldiers—who are tempted by jazz and sex and then set back on the glory road to salvation.
