SOCIETY OF THE SNOW, 2023, Dir. J. A. Bayona, 144 Min, Netflix, Spain
In Spanish with English subtitles.
J.A. Bayona’s SOCIETY OF THE SNOW, nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best International Film and Best Makeup & Hairstyling, portrays the harrowing events surrounding the 1972 crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which was chartered to transport a rugby team to Chile. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash and finding themselves in one of the world’s toughest environments, they are forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.
THE ORPHANAGE, 2007, Dir. J. A. Bayona, 105 Min, Park Circus, Spain, Mexico
A tale of love. A story of horror. Returning to her beloved childhood home by the Spanish seaside, Laura Jenkins has dreams of now turning it into an orphanage for disabled children. It will take some work, and her husband, Carlos, and her son, Simon, are certainly up for the task. But soon after arriving, seven-year old Simon starts having “imaginary” friends — friends he claims are masked children who roam the dark hallways of the manor. When Simon goes missing, Laura is forced to confront the demons of her childhood and the evil which now wishes to tear her family apart.
