The New Yorker Short Film Showcase

The American Cinematheque in partnership with The New Yorker is thrilled to present a showcase featuring their shortlisted animated short “Retirement Plan,” documentary shorts “Last Days on Lake Trinity” and “Cashing Out” and live-action short “Two People Exchanging Saliva.”

“Retirement Plan,” 2024, Dir. John Kelly, 7 Mins, Ireland

In the throes of his overstimulated, energy poor midlife, Ray (Domhnall Gleeson) fantasizes about everything he’d love to do in retirement, once he finally has the “time.”

“Last Days on Lake Trinity,” 2025, Dir. Charlotte Cooley, 29 Mins, USA

When a South Florida trailer park is slated for closure by its owner, Trinity Broadcasting Network – the world’s largest Christian TV station – the residents have until the end of the year to fight the eviction or find new homes. In “Last Days on Lake Trinity,” three friends navigate this crisis with humor, compassion, and resilience. The film reveals corporate cruelty, religious hypocrisy, and a mounting housing crisis for older Americans.

“Cashing Out,” 2024, Dir. Matt Nadel, 40 Mins, USA

At the height of the AIDS crisis, thousands of queer people sold their life-insurance policies for quick cash after being abandoned by their families and public institutions. “Cashing Out” explores this billion-dollar “AIDS profiteering” industry, and one filmmaker’s unexpected connection to it.

In a society where kissing is punishable by death, and people pay for things by receiving slaps to the face. Angine, an unhappy woman, shops compulsively in a department store. There, she becomes fascinated by a playful salesgirl. Despite the prohibition of kissing, the two become close, raising the suspicions of a jealous colleague.
