August 6 – August 25, 2023 Cormac McCarthy: An American Cinematheque Tribute Series | THE ROAD, THE COUNSELOR, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and ALL THE PRETTY HORSES
ABOUT THE SERIES: The American Cinematheque is proud to present this tribute in remembrance of one of the most esteemed novelists of contemporary literature, Cormac McCarthy. From his first book in 1965, McCarthy spent decades living hand-to-mouth on grants and fellowships before the commercial breakthrough of ALL THE PRETTY HORSES, the first of his Border Trilogy. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN is also set in the Southwest and its no-nonsense prose and bursts of violence found further success on the big screen (bringing the Coen brothers three Oscars). Postapocalyptic Pulitzer-Prize winner THE ROAD became a successful film adaptation as well, with Viggo Mortensen in the lead role. Though best known for his dozen novels, McCarthy also wrote the screenplay for Ridley Scott’s THE COUNSELOR, a dread-inducing intense drama featuring an impressive ensemble of Hollywood stars.
