November 16 - December 6, 2025 Park Chan-wook: An American Cinematheque Retrospective Series | NO OTHER CHOICE, SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE, LADY VENGEANCE, OLDBOY, THE HANDMAIDEN, JOINT SECURITY AREA
ABOUT THE SERIES: The American Cinematheque is thrilled to welcome South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook for a retrospective and advance screening of his newest film, NO OTHER CHOICE, followed by an in-person Q&A with Park and actor Lee Byung Hun. Our retrospective will revisit some of the works that have made Park a favorite of audiences and filmmakers alike, including the unforgettable OLDBOY, the crown jewel of his bloody and baroque Vengeance Trilogy, and his 2016 sensation THE HANDMAIDEN, a sumptuous, shifting psychological drama concerning a lesbian affair between a naive heiress and a conwoman in Japanese-occupied Korea. The AC’s retrospective will culminate with a special screening of JOINT SECURITY AREA, a thriller set in the Korean Demilitarized Zone that follows a United Nations investigation into a mysterious shooting. Park’s third film became the then-highest-grossing movie in South Korean history and helped usher in a new era of South Korean filmmaking.
