ABOUT THE SERIES:

The American Cinematheque is thrilled to host an in-person tribute for the acclaimed Serbian filmmaker Želimir Žilnik. A pioneer of the docudrama genre and key figure in the Yugoslav Black Wave, Žilnik has never shied away from exploring taboo subjects through experimental filmmaking. His signature style blends a narrative structure with non-professional actors, documentary visuals and minimal editing, all to depict the common person and the effects of life under socialism in the face of a fracturing nation. As a part of this year’s edition of ‘This Is Not a Fiction,’ the AC is honored to present the West Coast premiere of Žilnik’s newest project, EIGHTY PLUS, alongside a collection of his earlier films, with select screenings featuring in-person Q&As with the renowned documentarian himself.

Žilnik’s explosive first feature film, EARLY WORKS, boldly confronted controversial subjects. His depiction of revolutionaries, violence and nudity immediately drew attention with authorities trying to shut down production. Although contentious, Žilnik was praised internationally for his honest portrayal of the Yugoslavian struggles and he went on to win a Golden Bear Berlin Award for the film. Even Žilnik’s shorts, namely “Black Film,” “Uprising of Jazak,” and “Inventory” pack a punch, delivering honest accounts of the common people and their experiences with insecure housing, war resistance and hopes for the future. He delivers a similar message in TITO AMONG THE SERBS A SECOND TIME, albeit with a façade of comedy, by spotlighting the public’s opinion on politics and history all provoked by an actor dressed as a former Yugoslav leader in public. Zilnik has an incredible talent for unearthing the sentiments of the public through intimate stories. In MARBLE ASS, he takes a closer look at the queer community, following sex worker Merlinka and veteran Johnny as they navigate life in war-torn Belgrade. With his newest film EIGHTY PLUS, Žilnik follows an elderly jazz pianist who is prompted to recount the past as he comes into possession of his childhood home. Seemingly a film about family relationships, Žilnik’s sharp signature of historical and social themes still permeate, as memories and personal history are delivered through the pure emotions of non-professional actors. Join us for this tribute series as we experience history through Želimir Žilnik’s lens.
