A family of woodcutters eking out quiet lives in the dell of a European forest are transformed by their encounter with a mysterious stranger. Trading the oppressive darkness of his first two features for the enveloping oblivion of snow and distended sensory assault for delicate montage, Philippe Grandrieux manages to craft an even more menacing vision of cruelty and the limits of human endurance. The unerringly eddying, handheld shooting style provides the only tether to modernity. UN LAC otherwise suspends the viewer within the timeless purity of a folk tale – but like the frozen lake, seething forces rage just beneath the surface.
