ABOUT THE SERIES: The American Cinematheque is honored to present a tribute to pioneering Lebanese filmmaker Heiny Srour, whose radical body of work has left a mark on global cinema. Srour’s films merge the political with myth and striking visual experimentation, reclaiming women’s voices and illuminating histories of struggle in the process. Her landmark debut, THE HOUR OF LIBERATION HAS ARRIVED (1974), was the first Arab woman’s film ever to screen at the Cannes Film Festival. We also present her hypnotic masterpiece, LEILA AND THE WOLVES (1984), newly restored. An epic and dreamlike journey through the collective memory of women across Lebanon and Palestine, the film mixes folklore, oral testimony, and archival images.
