February 12 - February 15, 2026 Stellan Skarsgård: An American Cinematheque Tribute Series | SENTIMENTAL VALUE, GOOD WILL HUNTING, IN ORDER OF DISAPPEARANCE, BREAKING THE WAVES, MAMMA MIA!
ABOUT THE SERIES: The American Cinematheque is privileged to welcome actor Stellan Skarsgård for a special screening of SENTIMENTAL VALUE, earning Skarsgård his first Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actor. Screening alongside some of the performances that have inspired audiences the world over, join us for incredible films and post-screening discussions on his iconic roles. Skarsgård never plays the same character twice, often even in the same film, particularly remarkable considering his years-long collaborations with auteurs like Lars Von Trier and Hans Petter Moland. In his role as Nils Dickman in Moland’s action comedy IN ORDER OF DISAPPEARANCE, Skarsgård transforms from a soft-spoken snowplow driver to a father hell-bent on vengeance for the death of his son. In Von Trier’s BREAKING THE WAVES, what begins as an abandonment of self in a well-intentioned distancing of an aggrieved wife ends in a bittersweet reversal of fate with a transcendent performance from Skarsgård. It comes as no surprise that talent of this quality transcends borders as well, providing Hollywood with a truly versatile performer beloved for roles like Professor Gerald Lambeau, able to see the best in a marginalized janitor in GOOD WILL HUNTING, and Bill Anderson in MAMMA MIA!, lending an emotional depth to the light-hearted musical. His affinity for a “Thin Ice” approach to acting allows these performances to brim with feeling. The actor may speak of his style as non-technical, intuitive and child-like, but there is simply nothing easy about this method – only the actor’s exceptional ability to make it appear so.
