March 23 - March 25, 2026 Sergei Loznitsa: An American Cinematheque Tribute Series | TWO PROSECUTORS, THE TRIAL, MY JOY, DONBASS
ABOUT THE SERIES: The American Cinematheque is pleased to welcome Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa for an advance screening of his highly acclaimed, TWO PROSECUTORS, a chilling political thriller set at the height of Stalin’s great purge. Loznitsa’s heavily decorated filmography largely consists of documentaries focused on state violence in Eastern Europe, including THE TRIAL, for which the American Cinematheque is honored to premiere in Los Angeles. Both films screen as part of a larger series in an effort, much like Loznitsa’s films themselves strive for, to provide context. For Loznitsa, a prolific filmmaker with over 28 award-winning documentaries and five narrative features, many of which have screened in competition at the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals, context doesn’t simply mean set-up. Approached with the utmost journalistic integrity, context often is the conflict, the obstacle looming in the path of any meaningful action. Documentaries such as DONBASS, an examination of propaganda in eastern Ukraine, challenge viewers to find the historical throughline while features like MY JOY and TWO PROSECUTORS reveal just how personal the political can be, making Loznitsa a formidable enemy of obscurity, no matter the genre.
