ABOUT THE FILMS:

“Now You Tell One,” 1926, Dir. Charley Bowers, 22 Mins, Blackhawk Films, USA

Charley Bowers’ NOW YOU TELL ONE is a dazzling blend of slapstick, stop-motion animation and surreal visual invention. Long overlooked and only rediscovered decades after his death, Bowers has emerged as one of silent cinema’s most original comic filmmakers. His delightfully unpredictable comedy remains unlike anything produced by his contemporaries.

THE BLACK PIRATE, 1926, Dir. Albert Parker, 101 Mins, Museum of Modern Art, USA

Douglas Fairbanks reaches the height of his swashbuckling career in THE BLACK PIRATE (1926), one of silent cinema’s most spectacular adventure films. Produced at the peak of Fairbanks’ international popularity, the film follows a daring nobleman who infiltrates a band of pirates to avenge his father’s murder, leading to a succession of breathtaking action sequences staged with Fairbanks’ trademark athleticism and charm.

Equally remarkable is the film’s groundbreaking use of two-strip Technicolor. One of the earliest feature films photographed entirely in the process, THE. BLACK PIRATE demonstrated that color cinematography could become an integral part of dramatic storytelling rather than a novelty. This presentation features a beautiful new restoration that recreates the film’s original color design, allowing modern audiences to experience one of the silent era’s greatest technical and artistic achievements as it was originally intended.

Restored by The Museum of Modern Art and The Film Foundation in Cooperation with the British Film Institute. Funding provided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Special thanks to Alexander Payne.
