ABOUT THE FILMS: A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, 1935, Dir. Sam Wood and Edmund Goulding, 96 Mins, Warner Bros., USA The legendary Marx Brothers take a hilarious, musical swipe at self-importance, pomposity and insensitivity, that crescendos with a manic on-stage performance, A NIGHT AT THE OPERA. Milan. Seedy promoter Otis B. Driftwood (Groucho Marx) guarantees patroness (Margaret Dumont) a position in high society if she bankrolls an opera. The plan hinges on signing egotistical tenor Rodolfo Lassparri (Walter Woolf King), but Driftwood meets his match in talent manager Fiorello (Chico Marx), who represents “the world’s greatest tenor”—actually the more-deserving but unknown Ricardo Baroni (Allan Jones), who’s also in love with the opera’s soprano, Rosa (Kitty Carlisle). When Driftwood’s deal falls through, the promoter, his patroness, tenors, soprano and many more must make a madcap Atlantic steamship crossing. FORMAT: DCP THE COCOANUTS, 1929, Dir. Robert Florey and Joseph Santley, 96 Mins, Universal, USA While trying to keep his Hotel de Cocoanuts afloat, owner Hammer (Groucho Marx), flatters his only paying guest, Mrs. Potter (Margaret Dumont), while other guests also compete for her affection. Brothers Harpo and Chico, played by Harpo and Chico Marx, wreak havoc around the hotel while Hammer’s back is turned. FORMAT: DCP
