ABOUT THE FILM:

John Singleton’s directorial debut, BOYZ N THE HOOD, is the story of Tre Styles and the half-brothers Doughboy and Ricky Baker growing up in South Central LA. Set in 1984, the film’s recent past, with the sounds of helicopters, sirens, and gunfire heard throughout, scenes of streets populated with billboards for cigarettes and alcohol, late-night gang stand-offs, afternoon family gatherings, and dimly lit living room conversations depict South Central in a particular time and space. South Central in the mid-80s is violent, economically underdeveloped, gang-ridden, over-policed, and hearth and home to many. With this visual commentary and Singleton’s deft, direct screenplay, BOYZ N THE HOOD is an emotional, impactful coming of age story about choices provided and choices made, future possibility and impossibility, and who gets out of the hood.

Premiering at Cannes Film Festival in May 1991 and opening in July 1991, BOYZ N THE HOOD along with NEW JACK CITY set the standard for the 90s hood films. With Angela Basset, Laurence Fishburne, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut, Tyra Ferrell, Nia Long, and Regina King among the cast, BOYZ N THE HOOD would gross 57 million at the box office and garner Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay.
