ABOUT THE SERIES: The American Cinematheque is delighted to welcome Paul Schrader, whose distinct creative voice and oeuvre full of compellingly flawed protagonists have made him one of American cinema’s most iconic filmmakers. Join us on Sunday for a special screening of OH, CANADA, followed by a Q&A. Schrader’s latest film reunites him with Richard Gere, over 40 years after AMERICAN GIGOLO, with Gere portraying Leonard Fife, an aging documentarian reflecting on his life and regrets in this contemplative, arresting drama with an aesthetic restraint and formal inventiveness that cuts to the heart of its meditation of self-mythology. The filmmaker will also introduce his 1980 classic AMERICAN GIGOLO, the neo-noir crime drama that pushed the limits of on-screen sexuality and defined the sound, look and style of the ’80s. The Sunday Print Edition screening of HUD, the anti-Western whose dangerously charismatic antihero presaged Schrader’s best-known characters, will additionally be introduced by the filmmaker.
