THE AC INTERNATIONAL SUMMER VACATION Take a summer vacation without leaving the Aero Theatre seats with our cinematic journey around the world running all through August! Our journey begins with a one-way ticket to Rome, as we follow Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck through William Wyler’s classic romantic comedy ROMAN HOLIDAY. The next day, we explore Parisian boulevards and the French countryside through the precise eyes of Éric Rohmer in a double feature of the underseen films THE AVIATOR’S WIFE & FOUR ADVENTURES OF REINETTE AND MIRABELLE, presented on brand new 35mm prints courtesy of Metrograph Pictures! The following week, bring the whole family, as Louis Malle becomes our tour guide through Paris, leading us through the bustling city through a child’s hilarious stream-of-consciousness in ZAZIE DANS LE MÉTRO. Week three introduces a little romance into our travels, as we explore the complicated love triangles in François Truffaut’s 1962 classic JULES AND JIM and its 2001 counterpart, Alfonso Cuarón’s seminal Mexican road film Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN. The next day, things take a turn towards the surreal and avant-garde, with a double feature of Jean-Luc Godard’s apocalyptic fantasy through the countryside, WEEKEND, and Djibril Diop Mambéty groundbreaking portrait of early 1970s Senegal, TOUKI BOUKI. Mambéty’s ingenious mix of humor, realism, surrealism, and experimental editing and sound make up a personal style at once reminiscent of Godard’s work in the French New Wave and wholly its own. The following week, we take up temporary residence in the ridiculously bourgeoise homes featured in Lucrecia Martel’s Argentine debut film LA CIÉNAGA and Pier Paolo Pasolini’s TEOREMA. Both films depict some of the most insane dysfunctional family situations ever committed to film, presenting both directors’ treatises on a wide range of political topics, including class, art, religion, and sexuality. Winding down in our travels, we spend the next day poolside, basking in the 1960s modernism of Jacques Deray’s LA PISCINE and Frank and Eleanor Perry’s THE SWIMMER, two films dripping in mysterious intrigue and sexual tensions. And finally, we spend our remaining summer days soaking up the masterful and gorgeous portrayal of early sixties Taiwan in Edward Yang’s four-hour magnum opus, A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY. Join us on these unforgettable trips through France, Mexico, Senegal, Italy, Argentina & Taiwan at the Aero Theatre!
