June 28 - July 26, 2026 Éric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales Series | MY NIGHT AT MAUD’S, LA COLLECTIONNEUSE, CLAIRE’S KNEE, “The Bakery Girl of Monceau,” SUZANNE’S CAREER, LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON
ABOUT THE SERIES: This summer, the American Cinematheque is thrilled to present Éric Rohmer’s illustrious masterwork Six Moral Tales in its entirety. The series begins on 35mm as part of our ‘Sunday Print Edition’ with a vividly rendered tale of chance and desire in MY NIGHT AT MAUD’S. Rohmer’s influential cycle continues with the lush French Riviera-set LA COLLECTIONNEUSE, which took home the Jury Prize at the 17th Berlin International Film Festival and the existential musings on carnal temptations in CLAIRE’S KNEE. A double feature of the pensive short “The Bakery Girl of Monceau” and a spirited story of the volatility between two friends who covet the same woman in SUZANNE’S CAREER lead up to a sobering narrative revolving around a married couple’s loyalty and fidelity in LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON, the final installment of Rohmer’s series. Initially written as novellas, Rohmer’s filmic adaptations of his own writings feature luminous character studies and riveting ethical quandaries that are as pertinent as they were when conceived in the 1960s.
