The American Cinematheque is saddened by the loss of actor Sam Neill. An international star, known for gracing both independent foreign films and Hollywood blockbusters with his memorable, thoughtful presence, Neill brought an understated charisma and introspective dignity to each role. Praised by Steven Spielberg as “exceptionally collaborative,” Neill was a favorite of legendary auteurs. Join us as we revisit the iconic works and underseen classics that make up his remarkable filmography. 

Our tribute begins with Andrzej Żuławski’s legendary horror film POSSESSION, where Neill stars alongside Isabelle Adjani as incomparable scene partners who navigate their failing marriage as they both fall into madness. We then revisit Neill’s collaborations with renowned filmmaker John Carpenter: IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS and MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN. We continue our retrospective with what is perhaps the most iconic role of Neill’s as Alan Grant in JURASSIC PARK, where he brings honest wonder and heroism to Spielberg’s generation-defining blockbuster. In DEAD CALM, Neill stars opposite Nicole Kidman in this Australian thriller set on the high seas. Neill delivers a layered performance as an uncle set out to rescue his runaway nephew from the wilderness in Taika Waititi’s HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE. His quiet intensity lends itself to Waititi’s eccentric humor, his emotional depth revealing an endearing vulnerability.

We round out our series with Wim Wenders’ independent epic UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD, a film exploring dreams and memory amidst an apocalyptic threat. Neill’s character profoundly questions “In the beginning was the word. What would happen if only the image remained in the end?” From action flicks like EVENT HORIZON to period dramas like THE PIANO, we remember Neill and his dedication to independent film, the heart he brought to blockbuster performances and his iconic images that remain.
