AMERICAN FICTION, 2023, Dir. Cord Jefferson, 117 Min, Amazon Studios, USA

AMERICAN FICTION is Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

The film’s first-rate ensemble also includes Tracee Ellis Ross, John Ortiz, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Adam Brody, Keith David, Issa Rae and Sterling K. Brown. AMERICAN FICTION is produced by Ben LeClair, p.g.a., Nikos Karamigios, p.g.a., Cord Jefferson, p.g.a., Jermaine Johnson, p.g.a. and is executive produced by Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, Percival Everett and Michael Bowes.

BASQUIAT, 1996, Dir. Julian Schnabel, 110 Min, USA

The life and art of Jean-Michel Basquiat is brought to vivid and poignant life in Julian Schnabel’s debut feature film, starring Jeffrey Wright, David Bowie, Gary Oldman, and Dennis Hopper. Tracing Basquiat’s rise from graffiti artist to art-world darling, this evocative and deeply personal portrait celebrates the artist who challenged convention and left an indelible mark on modern culture.
