ABOUT THE FILMS:

DON’T LOOK BACK, 1967, Dir: D. A. Pennebaker, 96 Minutes, Janus Films, USA

Bob Dylan is captured on-screen as he never would be again in this groundbreaking film from D. A. Pennebaker. The legendary documentarian finds Dylan in England during his 1965 tour, which would be his last as an acoustic artist. In this wildly entertaining vision of one of the twentieth century’s greatest artists, Dylan is surrounded by teen fans, gets into heated philosophical jousts with journalists, and kicks back with fellow musicians Joan Baez, Donovan, and Alan Price. Featuring some of Dylan’s most famous songs, including “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” and “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue,” DON’T LOOK BACK is a radically conceived portrait of an American icon that has influenced decades of vérité behind-the-scenes documentaries.

FORMAT: DCP

I’M NOT THERE, 2007, Dir: Todd Haynes, 135 Minutes, Swank Motion Pictures, USA

Inspired by the music and the many lives of Bob Dylan, this Venice Special Jury Prize winner weaves together tall tales worthy of one of rock’s most revered and inscrutable figures. Six different actors embody facets of the singer-songwriter’s character: Christian Bale, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, Marcus Carl Franklin, Ben Whishaw and Cate Blanchett, whose take on the thin, wild and mercurial 1966-era Dylan earned a Golden Globe award and an Oscar nomination. “I’M NOT THERE is a fantasia, a tell-all, a biopic that’s all high points, a folk-rock essay, and a dream, all wrapped into one. It plays like the headiest musical ever made.” – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
