ABOUT THE FILM: Marguerite Duras stars alongside Gérard Depardieu in one of the writer-director’s most minimalist films. The two are shown reading from an unproduced film script about a female hitchhiker and a truck driver; their analysis gives seemingly ordinary scenes following the vehicle though French cities and countryside an unexpected context. While audiences were sharply divided at its Cannes premiere, the film earned such admirers as Jean-Luc Godard and Pauline Kael (and in a memorable POLYESTER sight gag, John Waters).
