THE CROSSING GUARD, 1995, Paramount, 111 min. Dir. Sean Penn
Following the death of his daughter, Freddy Gale (Jack Nicholson) has been caught in a downward spiral until the drunk driver (David Morse) who hit her is released on parole. Vowing revenge, Gale tracks the man down only to find a soul equally consumed by grief. Sean Penn directs Nicholson and an outstanding supporting cast, which includes Anjelica Huston, Robin Wright, and Piper Laurie.
THE PLEDGE, 2001, Park Circus, 124 min. Dir. Sean Penn
This neo-noir thriller from director Sean Penn begins on the eve of Jerry Black’s (Jack Nicholson) retirement from the police force, when the body of an 8-year-old girl is discovered, prompting an oath to a grieving mother to capture the child’s murderer. The dubious confession of a simple-minded ex-con and analysis of the girl’s drawings feeds Jerry’s suspicion that the killer is still on the prowl.
