ABOUT THE FILM: Young factory worker Karoline finds herself abandoned, pregnant, and on the brink of poverty in post-WWI Copenhagen. Desperate to escape her situation, she meets Dagmar, a charismatic woman running an illegal adoption agency behind the facade of a candy shop, profiting off of poor mothers desperate to offload unwanted children and placing them with respectable, affluent families. Taking on the role of wet nurse, Karoline soon forms a strong bond with her new employer, however, her world is shattered when she uncovers the nightmarish nature of this woman’s work.
