Based on the real-life case of Pamela Smart, Gus Van Sant’s neo-noir sees Nicole Kidman play an aspiring news broadcaster with murder in mind, and features Joaquin Phoenix in one of his earliest film roles. Television-obsessed Suzanne Stone marries a local restauranteur in order to keep herself financially solvent while she pursues a career in journalism, but her thoughts quickly turn to murder when realizes her husband Larry isn’t quite as malleable as she hoped. Matt Dillon, Illeana Douglas and Casey Affleck co-star in this adaptation of Joyce Maynard’s novel of the same name – look out for a David Cronenberg cameo.
