ABOUT THE FILMS:

“The Wind,” 2002–2005, Dir. Edward Yang, 7 Min, Taiwan

In Mandarin with English subtitles.

Of the many unrealized projects Yang developed in the wake of YI YI, the one that came the closest to fruition was an ambitious animated martial arts movie inspired by his lifelong love of graphic novels and his friendship with Jackie Chan. Though production on “The Wind” was halted after Yang’s death, this brief assembly of completed scenes offers a glimpse of what might have been.

YI YI, 2000, Dir. Edward Yang, 173 Min, Janus Films, Taiwan

In Mandarin with English subtitles.

YI YI follows a middle-class family in Taipei over the course of one year, beginning with a wedding and ending with a funeral. Whether chronicling middle-age father NJ’s tentative flirtations with an old flame or precocious young son Yang-Yang’s attempts at capturing reality with his beloved camera, the filmmaker deftly imbues every gorgeous frame with a compassionate clarity.
