Filmmaker Nicole Holofcener’s 2013 feature finds Eva, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, as a divorced single parent dreading her daughter’s departure for college and the emptiness she will leave behind. In order to fill that emptiness, she befriends Marianne (Catherine Keener), a perfect poet who constantly talks badly about her ex-husband which proves to be a problem for Eva who has just fallen for Albert, played by James Gandolfini in his penultimate role, Marianne’s awful ex-husband.
