Barry Gifford: An American Cinematheque Tribute

ABOUT THE SERIES:

The American Cinematheque is thrilled to welcome and celebrate the work of Barry Gifford, the acclaimed novelist, poet and screenwriter. For decades, Gifford has blurred the boundaries between literature and cinema, creating characters and stories that feel mythic, and also deeply rooted in the strange realities of American life. His fiction has inspired some of modern cinema’s most unforgettable journeys, while his collaborations with filmmakers have extended his distinctive voice directly onto the screen.

This tribute brings together films spanning that remarkable relationship between Gifford’s writing and the movies, including David Lynch’s WILD AT HEART and LOST HIGHWAY, Álex de la Iglesia’s PERDITA DURANGO, and ROY’S WORLD: BARRY GIFFORD’S CHICAGO.
The series also features a special rare presentation of NELSON ALGREN LIVE, starring Willem Dafoe alongside Barry Gifford.
Together, these works offer a journey through Barry Gifford’s America. Join the AC for these special screenings and in person Q&As to celebrate a writer that has left an indelible mark on American cinema.
