March 7 - March 30, 2025 INT. MOVIE THEATRE - Shaffer Brothers Series | THE WICKER MAN, FRENZY, AMADEUS, ABSOLUTION, EQUUS, THE PUBLIC EYE
ABOUT THE SERIES: Our ‘INT. MOVIE THEATRE’ series celebrating the art of screen writing begins with a tribute to the Shaffer Brothers. Deceit, paranoia, and envy. As the screenwriters behind British masterworks AMADEUS and FRENZY, respectively, Peter and Anthony Shaffer’s writing shaped cinematic history and screenwriting as an artform. Through their works for stage and screen, the Shaffer brothers plumbed the depths of that elemental fear and darkness lurking within us all—as well as our capacity for violence, creating shocking tableaus of pagan violence where the mundane meets the primal in EQUUS and THE WICKER MAN. Their collective oeuvre ranges from philosophical dramas and satirical comedies to cult thrillers that still stun and intrigue filmgoing audiences to this day. Join the American Cinematheque as we revisit the audacious masterpieces that these two Tony Award-winning virtuosos have conjured.
