Martin McDonagh: An American Cinematheque Retrospective

Following the sold-out West Coast Premiere of THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN at Beyond Fest 2022, the American Cinematheque is thrilled to present this retrospective to Academy Award winning filmmaker Martin McDonagh.

Born in London to Irish parents, Martin McDonagh was an accomplished playwright before shifting to film. His first work as a writer-director, “Six Shooter,” won an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short and his first feature, IN BRUGES, an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Follow-up SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS was a crime comedy along similar lines, but THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI, showed McDonagh mining drama to great effect, earning seven Oscar nominations (including wins for stars Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell). THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN, set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, reunites the filmmaker with IN BRUGES stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two friends, who find themselves at an impasse when one of them unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship.
