November 20 - November 30, 2026 Starring Patrick Stewart Series | GREEN ROOM, STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, EXCALIBUR, LOGAN
ABOUT THE SERIES: The American Cinematheque is deeply saddened by the loss of legendary actor Sir Patrick Stewart. Known for his prolific work both on stage and screen, Stewart created some of the most iconic characters of modern film and television. Be it in thought-provoking science fiction or mournful superhero westerns, he blended seamlessly into the roles and worlds he inhabited. Join us as we revisit some of his most unforgettable performances, from indie classics to fantasy epics. We begin our retrospective with Stewart’s unforgettable turn as a villainous bar owner in Jeremy Saulnier’s cult hit GREEN ROOM. Here, Stewart understands that true horror comes from the real world, that some of the scariest villains are the most unassuming. We then revisit the portrayal that took him from thespian to international star, his beloved performance as Captain Jean-Luc Piccard in STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, on 35mm. Stewart stars as a Knight of the Round Table in the visually arresting medieval fantasy EXCALIBUR, which received recognition from both Cannes and the Academy Awards. We round out our series with a film The Hollywood Reporter called “a true rarity in modern superhero movie making,” LOGAN. Here Sir Patrick Stewart revisits perhaps the most iconic role in his forte, Professor Charles Xavier, suffering from dementia at the end of his life, his psychic powers out of his control. Stewart bravely revisits his most recognizable role, a superhero, and considers him at his most vulnerable. What is left for these super humans when their powers no longer serve them? Stewart understands it is their humanity. It is a humanity that he brought to each and every performance, no matter the scale.
